The sculpture was made on site in 2001. A 25 ton block of Portland limestone was cut into two blocks and transported to the site of the collection in the early summer of 2001. The artist spent four weeks carving the work and in July after foundations were laid a crane transported the two pieces to the final position.
The press and private view in August was attended by representatives from the Ukrainian Commission in London, Trustees, local artists and neighbours.
The narrative content realises the relationship between Adam, Eve and the apple – the last representing Satan, knowledge, forbidden fruit, free will and transgression. Once Adam and Eve were one. Following their downfall they were bound into a three-way relationship – a couple joined forever by a third party – represented by the apple- never to be reunited in the original simple, monolithic state.
The work originated as a maquette from Ivan’s Master’s Diploma Exhibition The massive scale of the final work is important. The subject matter merits monumental expression and allows personal interaction with viewers, passing between the tall blocks, joining the trio, experiencing the powerful space.
