Jim Racine was a student at the Royal
College of Art on their Foundry Course when
his proposal for a Millennium sculpture was
accepted by the Trustees.
He
worked over three months in the Summer of
2000 to create Perch which is a bronze
construction cast in 12 modules which
are moulded from a holly tree on the site of
the Trust's Collection. The modules are
slotted on a stainless steel core and the
piece is 24 feet high by 3.5 inches
diameter.
The
modules were made on site where Jim made wax
models and ceramic shell moulds before
pouring the bronzes and welding them into
position.
The
work proposes an alternative perspective
with a viewing plane somewhat above the
viewer's position and draws upon a theory of
perspective used by classical painters.
