Otto Horvath was selected to be Artist in Residence in 1996. He had recently completed his Masters programme at Pecs University in southern Hungary. The Department of Fine Art recommended Otto for the residency.
The artist completed the carving of the work over a period of six weeks during the summer residency, after choosing the stone from the quarry in Portland, Dorset.
The piece was conceived as a sleeping, human form, influenced clearly by Inca and Mayan sculpture as well as the works of Henry Moore. The skilful working of the surface suggests complex structures within a simple single form.
Otto continues to work successfully on figurative and semi- figurative work in Hungary.
